SELL Games and Estonian Republic anniversary
SELL Games are international sports competition for students. Its roots go back to the year 1923, when first International Regional Student Sports Competitions were organized in Tartu and which later became known as SELL Games.
In 1923-1940 the SELL Summer Games were held 13, Winter Games (since 1929) 5 and the Chess Tournaments (since 1937) 3 times. SELL Games tradition restored in 1998 May, 75 years after first games. Since then, SELL Games has been organized properly in four host countries – Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Initiator of restoring games was Estonia.
It has been slightly more than a century since the Republic of Estonia was founded. SELL Games started already 95 years ago, but it is only five years younger than Estonian republic. As Estonia celebrates its 100th anniversary, SELL Games celebrates its 20th anniversary since restoring games tradition.
75 years had passed from the first games when in the spring of 1998 next SELL Summer Games were held in Tartu with 800 athletes from 59 universities of 13 states participating. The Estonian student body restored its status of initiating and co-ordinating student competitions. Now the games are open to universities all over the world!
Modern SELL games have been held before in Tartu (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014), Kaunas (1999, 2003, 2007, 2011,2015), Jelgava (2000, 2009), Riga (2005, 2013,2017), Tampere (2004,2016) ja Espoo (2008 ja 2012).
SELL Tartu Student games are especially for students, who inspire co-students for sports purposes, in addition to their dedication to studies. SELL games bigger purpose is to promote student sports. SELL Games are for amateur, competitive or professional athletes and this year students are going to compete in 12 different disciplines: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Floorball, Judo, Mini-football, Powerlifting, Swimming, Table tennis, Volleyball and Wrestling.
